TRAVEL

DSC_6249-Edit v1.jpg
  • When you arrive at a location, don't just blindly fire away using your camera like a machine gun, the results will be uninspiring.  Soak up the atmosphere of the place and then start taking shots.

  • Don't shoot the obvious, try looking at well photographed locations with a new pair of eyes, Metaphorically.  Consider changing lenses, viewpoints or even try a different type of exposure.

  • Try shooting some of the local people but be aware that traditions can vary from country to country.  Reactions vary from "You're stealing my soul" to "Give me some money".

  • Find out if there are any carnivals, festivals or markets in the area you are visiting.  These provide a wealth of photo opportunities.

  • Travel light but don't leave essential kit at home.  An SLR with a couple of zoom lenses should sufficient.

  • Don't get too tied up with shooting new and innovative images.  Take a compact for beach shots and general pictures

  • Get up early and shoot at first light.  Most places look wonderful first thing in the morning.

Pickup a postcard which will give you an idea of the best locations and when to shoot them

A polarising filter is useful for deepening blue skies and saturating colours.  Also keep a UV or skylight filter handy, especially if you're at high altitudes, to cut down haze.
